TRIP OVERVIEW

Trip Information

Upper Dolpo trekking route is an isolated and pristine zone near the Tibetan border of Nepal. It was unrestricted for the explorers in late eighties earlier this area was prohibited for the trekkers. This region located amid the Tibetan plateau and the Dhaulagiri Himalayan range it is one of the utmost colonized land of western Nepal. Most of the civilizations living here are mostly Tibetan folks who had migrated from Tibet at this region mostly tradition and the religious practices are based on the teaching of Buddhists. This district is inside the Shey Phoksundu National Park which is protected by an area of 3,500 square km of land, mostly above 4,000 meters. This trek was first endeavor by the first British tour group in the 1990 and after that lots of explorers started to visit this region. This region is a restricted area so; one needs a special permit to hike to this lower Dolpo region.

This trekking provides you the supreme remote and least developed region of Nepal but get to view the great Himalayan Shangri-La. The chief magnetism of this trek is you will passes through three passes in this area i.e. (Kagmara La 5115meter), (Baga La 5090m) and (Numa La 5360meter) with lovely snowcapped peaks. This trekking offers you the most astonishing views of the some mountains like Mt Annapurna, Mt Dhaulagiri and Mt Kanjiroba. Best part of this trek is you will be moving over the welcoming isolated hamlets, fascinating shey phoksundu Lake with crystal clear in blue color as well as  one of the second deepest lake145mdeepest in Nepal. We will also stop at the ancient century monasteries –shey Gompa with the inscription practices of Buddhists religion with the Mani walls. If you are nature lovers you even get to sight the flora and fauna all through your trail like Himalayan blue sheep, jackal wolf, snow leopard etc. and the flora you get to perceive is Rhododendron one of the national flower of Nepal, oak, pine, spruce etc. on the way to your trail you will be also get to visit the yak herders. Most of the people speak their native language (Tibetan) hardly only a few people understand Nepali languages.

The upper Dolpo trek begins from an airstrip from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj which takes around 45 minutes and in the next morning we will take a flight to Jhupal which you will reach at the morning so, we can carry on our hike to Dunai.

For the upper dolpo trekking you can trek on the specific month of June, July, and August however if you are keen to trek you can even trek during spring and autumn season but during this period the climate will be too cold so you better carry your warm clothes etc.

ITINARARY

Day 1 - Arrival

Our team representative will welcome you at Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu and transfer you to a fine hotel. You can roam around the nearby market and restaurants. Our trip manager will brief you about the trip ahead in the evening. You will be spending the night at hotel.

Day 2 - Flight to Juphal and Trekking Begins

After a pleasant overnight at Kathmandu, we will begin our trip with a domestic flight to Nepalgunj. Nepalgunj is our transit point. We are having another flight to Juphal (2320 meters). The flight gives the opportunity to enjoy the panoramic views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri peaks to the north. We land at Juphal airstrip from where our real trek begins. We will have a walk for about 4.5 hours from the airstrip that leads to our overnight camp at Dunai village (2140 meters). It is a small township and the administrative headquarter of Dolpo region.

Day 3 - Dunai - Hankhe

From the camp at Dunai, we will continue the trek. Today’s destination will be Hankhe (2600 meters). It takes 4.5 hours to reach there. During the walk, we can see beautiful views of the Kagmara Peak up in the valley. As we have just started the trek, we will go slow and have a comfortable walk. After we reach Hankhe, we will set up camp for overnight stay.

Day 4 - Rechi

The path from this camp leads to small ups and downs along the riverbed as the ascent takes us steeply to 3000 meters. There are several streams along the way to freshen ourselves as we move up. Trekking continues upstream to reach Rechi (2940 meters). We will walk for around 5 hours to reach our destination. You will enjoy the landscape around. After the day’s trekking, we will stop at a fine place, set up tents and enjoy the camping.

Day 5 - Phoksundo Lake

On this day we will continue our journey along the valley floor to reach the spiritual Phoksundo lake at an altitude of 3733 meters after a 5-hour trekking. The tiring day will end with the view of serene blue lake and its cool water. It will make you forget all the tiredness and freshen up your energy level. We will spend our night in the tent that we will set up nearby.

Day 6 - Know the Phoksundo

Today will be a well deserved rest day at the Phoksundo lake premises. Phoksundo is an alpine fresh water lake in Shey Phoksundo National Park. It is the deepest lake of the country with the maximum depth of 145 meters (476 feet). We will enjoy our day by taking photographs roaming around going for short hike to the village of Ringma and the Buddhist monasteries around. There are more than 20 stupas and one gompa around the lake. We will return to camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7 - Phoksundo Khola Trekking

From Phoksundo lake, we continue our adventurous trek to reach Phoksundo Khola (3500 meters). We walk for 6 hours through the rough and rocky ledge along the western bank. The lake is the source of the Phoksundo river. On the bank of the river, we set up the tents for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8 - Phoksundo Bhanjyang

Today’s walk leads along the path through a glacial valley that now heads to Phoksundo Bhanjyang (4400 meters). This will be a long trekking day. The trail will pass through the confluence of mountain rivers, meadows and ultimately the Kang-La pass. Our accommodation will be in tents ahead of the pass.

Day 9 - Trek to Shey Gompa

We will start our walk early in the morning. Today’s destination will be Shey Gompa (4160 meters). There are excellent views down upon the large valley. You will enjoy the views of river, grazing fields and herds of mountain sheep (Changra). A red chorten appears as we approach Shey Gompa. After crossing a wooden bridge, we enter Shey Gompa compound. We set up the camps and stay there during the night.

Day 10 - A day at Shey Gompa

We hike around Shey Gompa and rest on this day. The monastery is also known as Crystal Monastery because Shey means ‘crystal’ in the local language. It is very ancient monastery built by a Lama guru Tenzing Ra-Pa during 11th century. Even today, monks and Lamas meditate and study Buddhist texts here. Knagju Nala and Yeju Nala are the two rivers that meet in this region. It is a perfect place to observe the Tibetan culture, Buddhist traditions with stone mani, prayer wheels and flags. The amazing trip to this monastery certainly makes this trek special.

Day 11 - Trek to Namgung

After a day at Shey Gompa, we will resume our journey by following a trail to Namgung(4430 meters) through Saldang Pass (5010 meters). The trail is zigzag and rough. Namgung is a small village in Dolpo region. The economy of the region is based on agriculture, animal husbandry and trading. Potato, radish, buckwheat and oil seed are the major crops cultivated. We will pass the night in our tented camps.

Day 12 - Trek to Seldang

Leaving the Namgung village, our trek heads towards Saldang (3770 meters). After four hours of hard ups and downs, Saldang appears below on a plateau high above the Namkhong Mala. Saldang is the largest village of inner Dolpo area and also the most populated one. An ancient trade route to Tibet goes through this village. We stop at this place and camp for the night.

Day 13 - Trek to Sibu

Today’s journey will pass through terraced fields, stupas, chortens, heaps of mani stones and sloppy ways. Although we will walk for six hours, it will be an easy walk. The trail is comparatively pleasant as we don’t have to pass through steep slopes today. Finally, we will reach today’s destination - Sibu at an altitude of 4000 meters.

Day 14 - Sibu - Jeng La Phedi

We walk along the trail that passes by Nam Khong river in the morning. As we move further to the north, we can see barren lands with less vegetation and herds of Yaks used for transportation. After crossing the confluence of two streams, our trail picks up in altitude as we climb up to the base of Jeng La. The base is called Jeng La Phedi (4480 meters) which will be our stopping point for today.

Day 15 - Trek to Tokyu Gaun

As we continue our journey from Jeng La Phedi, we are going to cross Jeng La Pass after climbing for two hours. At an altitude of 5090 meters, we can get the view of peaks to the south including the north face of Dhaulagiri. Now the trail goes downhill as we pass through green Tarap valley, Tarap Chu river and the cultivated fields, chortens and gompas. After 7 hours of trekking, we will reach Tokyu Gaun and stay there in our tented camps.

Day 16 - Trek to Dho Tarap

From Tokyu Gaun, we move further down along Tarap Chu river. As we move down, we can see the beautiful greenery again on the sides of the river. We will pass through the Crystal Mountain School sponsored by a French NGO. After just two hours of walking, we will reach Dho Tarap. The village is surrounded by fields of potatoes, buckwheat and barley.

There are two monasteries nearby, which we can visit as we will have plenty of time on this day. People of Tibetan and Magar origin leave peacefully in this village practising their own cultures and religions. We will take rest in a camp in the evening and during the night time.

Day 17 - Trek to Tarap River

Today is one of the toughest days in our trip. We are going to have a seven hours of walk through a rough trail. But we can customize the trek and shorten the distance we cover today by selecting a closer campsite. We come across a gorge passing along the bushes of juniper and wild rose. After we reach the confluence of Tarap Chu river and Lang river, we set our camps nearby for night stay.

Day 18 - Trek to Khani Gaun

We continue our journey down the gorge of the Tarap river, that will eventually take us to Khani Gaun(2550 meters) by the end of the day. The valley gets narrower making a deep gorge. As we reach Khani Gaun, that is beside the Tarap river we would have walked for about seven hours. We will have good rest at the camp that we will set up there.

Day 19 - Trek to Tarakot

Today we leave Khani Gaun and we head towards Tarako. We will pass through the forests, rivers, gorge and cultivated fields for about four hours. Tarakot is an old fortress situated south of Bheri river at an altitude of 2537 meters. There are few chortens and gompas nearby. We will select a suitable site for camping and will be staying at the camp for the night.

Day 20 - Dunai revisited

We will continue our walk beside the Bheri river and along the pine forests. After completing a circuit, we will reach Dunai, the same place where we had stayed on our second day of this trek. It will take five to six hours to reach there. We will stay in tented camps in Dunai once again.

Day 21 - Back to Juphal

We will fly to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj, once again enjoying the great views of mountains and valleys from above the clouds. With the beautiful trekking memories of Dolpo region, we will land at the Kathmandu airport. You will be transferred to one of the finest hotels in Kathmandu for night stay.

Day 22 - Flight to Kathmandu

We will fly to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj, once again enjoying the great views of mountains and valleys from above the clouds. With the beautiful trekking memories of Dolpo region, we will land at the Kathmandu airport. You will be transferred to one of the finest hotels in Kathmandu for night stay.

Day 23 - Leisure day

Today is one of the toughest days in our trip. We are going to have a seven hours of walk through a rough trail. Day 24 - See you again

This will be the last day of our togetherness for this time. Our staff will drop you to the airport. The 25-day program comes to an end. With the hope of seeing you again, we wish for your safe and great journey ahead.

Trip Note

Hotel and Lodge:

Ganesh Himal Hiking team arranges the best comfy and pleasant accommodation and provides you the well-nourished hygienic foods. Throughout your stay in Kathmandu i.e. 3 nights you will be staying at the best standard hotel which will be rating at 2- 3-star hotel. Although if you want to stay at 4- 5-star hotel in the well sumptuous hotel and are able to pay for this expenses then you have this kind of choices but for the luxurious hotel the payment should be deposited by the clients itself. As the Ganesh Himal Hiking team company can only afford the hotel which is the rate at 2-3 star hotels. However once you are set for your trek there will be no such facilities like in the city of Kathmandu and one should not expect like Kathmandu as we are trekking to the remote area so, we will be staying at tea houses and local lodges. In such hotel there will be a usual bed and of course pillow. Most of the lodges of this region depend on lanterns or candle only a few has the facility of electric lights nonetheless you will be getting clean hygienic food which is most important. Most of the lodges will be already booked earlier before your trek however in some situation we will be not able to book in advance but not to worry we can book -in while reaching there because there are ample of lodges and some tea houses in this region and if not we can easily set a camp which will the most adventurous part of the trek itself is interesting and adventurous.

Meals and Drinks:

We the company totally focuses on client’s meals by making sure that each and every client get the same portion which is clean hygienic and nourished which is most necessary while trekking. While trekking all the meals i.e. breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided but in the Kathmandu city sometimes breakfast and sometimes dinner are included where you can go through the each detail itinerary below. During trek breakfast and dinner will be served in the lodges or teahouses and for the lunch our expert trek leader or guide will be taking you the best clean hotels. However we suggest you carry a water purification tablets to purify the water as on the way you will get normal water but if you want bottled mineral water you will easily get in some shops or tea houses but the expense of the bottled water should be paid by the client itself as it is not included in package.

Best Season to Travel:

The flawless seasons for Nepal visit will be in the spring season in the month of March to May and autumn season on September and November. Even in winter one can travel but only if you can bear the cold weather season. We strongly recommended the clients not to trek on the monsoon season on the month of June, July and August because during this period it rains heavenly and in day afternoon the sun rays will be extremely blazing heat so, it will be difficult to trek. So, we suggest every client trek in the specific seasons.

Luggage/Backpack:

Throughout your trekking your luggage will be carried by our porters and you have to carry your own small baggage containing your own water bottle, towel, tissue or toilet paper, camera or any other stuff which you usually carry and this small baggage should be carried by yourself. Some of the gears and clothes which are not needed during your trek can be left in the hotel safe deposit box carefully locking it properly and for the deposit there will be no charges so, you can freely keep your belongings which are not needed. The Nepal domestic airlines do not exceed more than 15 kg which also includes your hand baggage. If your baggage exceeds more than 15 kg then some charge should be deposit which is not included in the package.  

Guide/Porter on Trek:

We the company Ganesh Himal hiking team will be providing you the well expert trained trekking guide who will be handling all your trip issue. Also we will be providing you a cordial and sincere porter who will be carrying your 10 kg luggage of each client. Like if you are trekking in a huge group like more than 10 people than we will be providing you an extra guide which will be divided into two groups or more than three according to the number of people in the group. 

Group Size, Guide and Crew Member:

Ganesh Himal hiking team arranges trek with the minimum solitary client to maximum 16 clients in a group. In the larger group we will be arranged by dividing the groups. However one can stay in the same lodge but during your trek you will be having a different guide. We the Ganesh Himal Hiking team offers one guide for maximum 10 people in the group and if the number exceeds more than 10 till 16 then we will be providing you 2 guides. 

Personal Expenses on Trek:

Your personal expenses should be deposited by yourself like if you addicted to alcohol and all the alcohol you consume during your trip should be paid by yourself that goes to snacks or any other additional meals. Though the cost of accommodation and meals are included in package but such additional meals and drinks- alcohol and non-alcohol beverage, snacks, tips for guide and porters, hot shower- accessible only in some hotel, entrance fee around $ 25 for visiting heritage sites of Kathmandu, meals while you are in Kathmandu and the normal meals will cost around $ 5-7. It is up to you whether you like to give tips to the guide and porter, if you are satisfied with their services then you can tip them.

Gears Available in Kathmandu:

For the trekking equipment you can easily get it at Nepal country stores at the reasonable price and if you like you can also rent the trekking equipment. You don’t have to carry or buy from your hometown because all the trekking gear can be easily available in this country –Nepal.  

A Typical Day on Trek:

On a customary day you are necessary to trek for 4-6 hours each day. After breakfast we will start to walk and then we will be stopping for a lunch and after lunch we will walk for 3-4 hours to reach our destination. After lunch we will be trekking only for few hours and we will reach our trekking destination in 1—2 hours. Like in some days you will reach your destination in afternoon hours and then you can have lunch and then relax, or take shower, read a novel or wander around the area and even you can play cards with the group, guide and all.

Our Greetings at Airport:

We suggest you that when you are confirmed for this trip we advise you to give us your international flight schedule so, we the team can easily get to you and pick you up from the airport on time. As soon as you finish processing the customs formalities and come out from there and there you can find our representative carrying a signboard of Ganesh Himal Hiking Team and the team will greet you and take you to the hotel in private vehicle. Like if you have already booked the hotel by your own then we advise informing the hotel that you are staying so it will be easy for our representative to drop you at the hotel.

Itinerary and Possible Changes on it:

Our usual itinerary of the trek is 24 days which is main customary and pragmaticwhich has also included your arrival day, departure day or Kathmandu sightseeing day tour are all included in this package itinerary. If you like to adjust the itinerary we can set it for you as per your desire so, before that let us know before booking the trip and then we will arrange the itinerary and the cost. Like if you like to extend more days then we will even manage it for you as in our package we have kept extra day because we don’t know the situation of Himalaya weather it suddenly changes and faces problems like delayed flights or cancellation of flight.

Insurance/Rescue/Evacuation:

Client’s safety is our main priority and makes sure that each and every client is well taken care of.  If by chance anyone got sick during trek we will take you to the hospital and if one is seriously ill then we will rescue a helicopter and then they will take you to the hospital and all the expenses are carried out by the travel insurance company so, make sure to cover the insurance policy. Booking and Payment:

For booking any trip, trek, expedition first you have to deposit 20% in advance if you are confirmed for the trek you have to send even your flight detail schedule, a passport photocopy and if you cancel the booking then this 20% is not -refundable.  The remaining 80% can be paid when you reach Kathmandu and if you want to pay in advance you can deposit it by transferring through a bank, credit card so, lets us know then we will be sending you the detail for payment.

We received outstanding personal service from Binod and his team at Ganesh Himal Hiking Team. It was an exceptional experience in every way. We were met at the airport, he gave us personal transportation along with many great tours to cultural sites in Kathmandu, he took us to some wonderful restaurants and he set us up in a very nice hotel in Thammel. Binod really knows how to take great care of his clients with a personal touch. We also loved meeting his mother, father and his family which added greatly to our cultural experience in Nepal.

Additionally, Binod's brother Bishnu, was our guide on our trek to Mt. Everest Base Camp. Bishnu took excellent care of my trekking partner and me throughout the trek to Everest Base Camp and back. Our trek was also an amazing cultural experience as well as a remarkable trekking experience! We loved the Nepalese people and, of course, we loved seeing the incredible scenery. Also, Binod personally guided us on a trip to Pokhara, Nepal where he arranged for us a guided rafting trip, a paragliding trip and a trip to Chitwan National Park where we did a tour on the back of an elephant spotting wildlife and we were able to attend a nice cultural program. The accommodations in Pokhara and the food were fantastic.
