Trip Information

Gokyo Valley Trek is a splendid journey in the outskirts of the beautiful Gokyo Ri peak, shimmering sapphire lakes and the magnanimous Sherpa’s .An ascent to Gokyo Ri at an altitude of 5340 m stands as the highest point in this trek which comes with a spectacular view of Everest, Gokyo valley, Gokyo lake, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu and the beautiful lush green vegetation accompanied by wildlife and seasonal flora. As a result popular among environmental scientist, ecologists, photographers, trekkers along with the pilgrims. 

Generally, Gokyo valley trek comes with a package of sightsee in the beautiful architecturally rich Kathmandu valley with the ancient Pagoda temple and the spirited local people which continues with a morning flight to Lukla. Since , the trek begins with a descend to Phakding and ascent to Namche bazzar passing across beautiful pine and rhododendron forest along the banks of Dudh Koshi river leading to the gateway of Everest, Namche. For the purpose of acclimatization we take a day break over there which comes very handy as you can enjoy the beautiful suburb enriching you spiritually as well as much needed information on mountaineering and climate as we explore the market visit monasteries and take short tour at museum and schools. Taking much needed rest we head to Dole via Khumjung exploring this Himalayan lifestyle, people and the landscape.  As you climb to Dole you can see sudden change in everything surrounding ,vegetation and civilization though small tea houses keep you company at every step.  From Dole crossing the shepherds herding ground and following steep rugged trails reach Macchermo to lead us to Gokyo where you get a pool of opportunity to explore numerous glacier lake such as Ngzommpa, Cho la, Dudh Pokhari and Gokyo . Lakes in the Gokyo valley is well known as the fresh water lakes in the highest altitudes which has garner it an honor to be enlisted on Ramsar site since, 2007. It constituents of five major lakes among which Thonak cho (160.8 acres) is the largest followed by Gokyo cho (160 acres). These lakes are source of life for many including the wildlife, peoples and vegetation which states its importance in every way whether religiously, culturally and environmentally becoming shrine (festival at August) and mode of survival. 

The lush green vegetation, pristine sapphire water, icy cold glaciers, gleaming snowcapped mountains, warm hearted peoples this trek has it all. ITINARARY

Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu at altitude of 1300 meter &4264 feet

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International airport our representative from GHHT- Ganesh Himal Hiking Team will be already there waiting for you at the airport and then they will give you a warm welcome and drive you to the hotel where you can relax and freshen up. In evening the GHHT will be hosting a welcome dinner in excellent Nepali restaurants which serve you delectable Nepali cuisine which will be introduction of Nepali food culture.

Dinner is included.


Day 02: Sightseeing Kathmandu and trek preparation

Today we will start our trip by visiting four UNESCO world heritage sites of Kathmandu city. Initially we will be visiting historical Kathmandu Durbar Square next we will visit Hindu holiest shrine called Pashupatinath temple which is also the cremation site of Hindus. After that we will visit the well known Swambhunath temple simply known as monkey temple. Next we will be heading to Boudhanath stupa which is the pilgrimage sites of Buddhists and it is the largest stupa in South Asia. In noon time we will gather at GHHT office and discuss about the trip and also we will be introducing you to other fellow participants who will be joining you. We will spend our night at Kathmandu.

Day 03: Fly towards Lukla at 2,800 meter &9,184 feet: trek to Phakding at 2,652 meter 8,700 feet: 3 - 4 hrs.

Today early morning we take a flight to Lukla and during your flight you will be enjoying amazing view of Himalayas including with the mighty highest mountain Everest. Reaching at Lukla we will be meeting other crew members and then we will begin our trek towards Phakding. We will spend our night at Phakding.

Day 04: Phakding toward Namche Bazaar (3,440 m/11,283 ft): 5 - 6 hours

Today we will be trekking alongside the Dudh Koshi River and today trek we will come across abundant villages, chortens, monasteries and even we will be crossing the suspension bridge several times. On the way to Benkar village we will get picturesque view of Himalayas including with mount Thamserku. At Monjo our trekking permits will be checked and then we will be entering the Sagarmatha National Park. After that we will descend down and then trek for awhile and then we will reach at Jorsale and then towards Namche Bazaar. We enjoy walking via river bed and cross the Hillary suspension bridge and then we will ascend to Namche Bazaar. We will relish the breathtaking view of Kusum peak, Kwangde peak, Lhotse, Kangaru peak, Tawache and highest mountain Everest. We will spend our night at Namche bazaar.

Day 05: Namche Bazaar: acclimatization

Today is the day for acclimatizing the altitude where we will be properly adapt the altitude to get rid of altitude sickness. Instead of staying idle we will be hiking towards Khumjung village and enjoy the amazing view of Himalayas. We can also wander around the Namche Bazaar where you get to explore Sherpa culture and their traditions. In Khumjung you will be visiting Khumjung monastery where yeti scalp are kept in this monastery. We will then ascend to Syangboche and from here we will enjoy mind blowing view of Thamserku, Khumbila and Kongde peaks. We will then hike back to Namche Bazaar. We will spend our night at Namche Bazaar.

Day 06: Namche Bazaar toward Phorse at 3810 meter& 12,496 feet: 5 - 6 hrs.

Today we will leave Namche Bazaar on a path with steady up and down and on the way we will spot several animals like musk deer, pheasants, Himalayan Thar and many more and from here we will descend down to Kyanjuma. After that we will follow the trails of Gokyo and on the way to Mong we will get slightly view of Ama Dablam, Tawache, Khumbila and Thamserku mountains. After that we will be descend down towards Dudh Koshi River and then climb via rhododendron forests and then we will reach at Phorse. We get great view of Cholatse and Tawache peaks. We will spend our night at Phorse.

Day 07: Phorse village toward Machhermo at 4,470 meter &14,663 feet: 5 - 6 hrs.

Today we start our day crossing the Dudh Koshi River and on the way we might come across Himalayan Pheasants, musk deer, mountain goats and many more. We will be trekking via forests, cascading waterfall and bridge and then we will reach at Dole. We will climb on steady trail with scenic view of Kantega, Thamserku and Cho Oyu Mountain. After that we will climb towards Luza village and walk for awhile over Dudh Koshi River. We will continue our trek through tiny village and sandy path and then we will reach at Machhermo. Here we will be visiting the Himalayan Rescue Hospital and attend altitude sickness class where they will brief you about the precaution of altitude sickness. We will spend our night at Machhermo.

Day 08: Machharmo toward Gokyo at 4800 meter &15,744 feet: 5 - 6 hrs.

Today we will be ascending to high hill and relish the view of Kangtega and Dudh Koshi River even Cho Oyu and Thamserku Mountain can be spot. From here our valley widens and then our trail passes via chorten and then we will reach at Phangga. Before descending down to river bank we will ascend to the moraine of Ngozamba glacier. Before reaching Gokyo we will be passing Longpongo, Dudh Pokhari and Raboche Tscho. We will spend our night at Gokyo.

Day 09: Gokyo Valley: Climb Gokyo Ri at 5357 meter &17,570 feet and hike to fifth lakes: 5 - 6 hrs.

Today once again we will be acclimatizing the altitude at Gokyo if the weather supports us we will climb towards Gokyo Ri. Reaching at the top of the Gokyo Ri we can admire amazing view of Himalayas as well as tranquil Gokyo Lakes. We will be also hiking to Gokyo Lake. We will then ascend close to the hill where we will be rewarded with stunning view like mount Cho Oyu, Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Gyachung Kang and Makalu. The viewpoint spot is identified Scoundrel viewpoint where one gets mind blowing view. After that we will retrace back to Gokyo. We will spend our night at Gokyo.

Day 10: Gokyo toward Dole: 3 - 4 hrs.

We will descend down on the trail alongside the Dudh Koshi River and then we will be passing the Gokyo lakes and on the way we will be enjoying great view of Taboche and Cholatse peaks. We will then climb up hill and then we will descend down gradually. We will then pass choten and at the edge of Chorten we will get captivating view of Cho Oyu, Kangtega and Thaserku mountains. We will then walk towards Machhermo, Lhafarma and Luza village and then we will reach at Dole. We will spend our night at Dole.

Day 11: Dole toward Namche Bazaar: 4 - 5 hrs.

We will descend down on steep path towards Phortse Thanga through rhododendron and cascading waterfall. On the way we might also come across Himalayan pheasants, musk deer, mountain goats and many more. On the way to Mong we will get amazing view of mount Khumbila. We will then head on the trail to Namche and view amazing view of Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kantega and Taboche peaks. With few hours of trekking we will reach at Namche army camp and enjoy the last view of mountains. After trekking for awhile we will reach at Namche bazaar. We will spend our night at Namche Bazaar.

Day 12: Namche Bazaar toward Lukla: 6 - 8 hrs.

Before trekking on a level trail we will first descend on rocky path and then we will be crossing the suspension bridge several times and then we will reach at lukla. Today our trek finally comes to end. We will spend our night at Lukla.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.


Day 13: Fly to Kathmandu

Today early morning after breakfast we will take a flight to Kathmandu, landing at the Kathmandu airport our representative from GHHT will be dropping you at the hotel. You can relax at the hotel and start packing your luggage as tomorrow you will be flying to your destination. In evening the GHHT will be hosting a farewell dinner. We will spend our night at Kathmandu.

Day 14: Final departure

Today your voyage to Gokyo valley trek comes to a conclusion and one of our representatives from the GHHT will be dropping you at the Tribhuvan International airport three hours earlier than your flight schedule.

Trip Note

Hotel and Lodge:

Ganesh Himal Hiking team arranges the best comfy and pleasant accommodation and provides you the well nourished hygienic foods. Throughout your stay in Kathmandu i.e. 3 nights you will be staying at the best standard hotel which will be rating at 2- 3-star hotel. Although if you want to stay at 4- 5-star hotel in the well sumptuous hotel and are able to pay for this expenses then you have this kind of choices but for the luxurious hotel the payment should be deposited by the clients itself. As the Ganesh Himal Hiking team company can only afford the hotel which is the rate at 2-3 star hotels. However once you are set for your trek there will be no such facilities like in the city of Kathmandu and one should not expect like Kathmandu as we are trekking to the remote area so, we will be staying at tea houses and local lodges. In such hotel there will be a usual bed and of course pillow. Most of the lodges of this region depend on lanterns or candle only a few has the facility of electric lights nonetheless you will be getting clean hygienic food which is most important. Most of the lodges will be already booked earlier before your trek however in some situation we will be not able to book in advance but not to worry we can book -in while reaching there because there are ample of lodges and some tea houses in this region and if not we can easily set a camp which will the most adventurous part of the trek itself is interesting and adventurous.

Meals and Drinks:

We the company totally focuses on client’s meals by making sure that each and every client get the same portion which is clean hygienic and nourished which is most necessary while trekking. While trekking all the meals i.e. breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided but in the Kathmandu city sometimes breakfast and sometimes dinner are included where you can go through the each detail itinerary below. During trek breakfast and dinner will be served in the lodges or teahouses and for the lunch our expert trek leader or guide will be taking you the best clean hotels. However we suggest you carry a water purification tablets to purify the water as on the way you will get normal water but if you want bottled mineral water you will easily get in some shops or tea houses but the expense of the bottled water should be paid by the client itself as it is not included in package.

Best Season to Travel:

The flawless seasons for Nepal visit will be in the spring season in the month of March to May and autumn season on September and November. Even in winter one can travel but only if you can bear the cold weather season. We strongly recommended the clients not to trek on the monsoon season on the month of June, July and August because during this period it rains heavenly and in day afternoon the sun rays will be extremely blazing heat so, it will be difficult to trek. So, we suggest every client trek in the specific seasons.

Luggage/Backpack:

Throughout your trekking your luggage will be carried by our porters and you have to carry your own small baggage containing your own water bottle, towel, tissue or toilet paper, camera or any other stuff which you usually carry and this small baggage should be carried by yourself. Some of the gears and clothes which are not needed during your trek can be left in the hotel safe deposit box carefully locking it properly and for the deposit there will be no charges so, you can freely keep your belongings which are not needed. The Nepal domestic airlines do not exceed more than 15 kg which also includes your hand baggage. If your baggage exceeds more than 15 kg then some charge should be deposit which is not included in the package.  

Guide/Porter on Trek:

We the company Ganesh Himal hiking team will be providing you the well expert trained trekking guide who will be handling all your trip issue. Also we will be providing you a cordial and sincere porter who will be carrying your 10 kg luggage of each client. Like if you are trekking in a huge group like more than 10 people than we will be providing you an extra guide which will be divided into two groups or more than three according to the number of people in the group. 

Group Size, Guide and Crew Member:

Ganesh Himal hiking team arranges trek with the minimum solitary client to maximum 16 clients in a group. In the larger group we will be arranged by dividing the groups. However one can stay in the same lodge but during your trek you will be having a different guide. We the Ganesh Himal Hiking team offers one guide for maximum 10 people in the group and if the number exceeds more than 10 till 16 then we will be providing you 2 guides. 

Personal Expenses on Trek:

Your personal expenses should be deposited by yourself like if you addicted to alcohol and all the alcohol you consume during your trip should be paid by yourself that goes to snacks or any other additional meals. Though the cost of accommodation and meals are included in package but such additional meals and drinks- alcohol and non-alcohol beverage, snacks, tips for guide and porters, hot shower- accessible only in some hotel, entrance fee around $ 25 for visiting heritage sites of Kathmandu, meals while you are in Kathmandu and the normal meals will cost around $ 5-7. It is up to you whether you like to give tips to the guide and porter, if you are satisfied with their services then you can tip them.

Gears Available in Kathmandu:

For the trekking equipment you can easily get it at Nepal country stores at the reasonable price and if you like you can also rent the trekking equipment. You don’t have to carry or buy from your hometown because all the trekking gear can be easily available in this country –Nepal.  

A Typical Day on Trek:

On a customary day you are necessary to trek for 4-6 hours each day. After breakfast we will start to walk and then we will be stopping for a lunch and after lunch we will walk for 3-4 hours to reach our destination. After lunch we will be trekking only for few hours and we will reach our trekking destination in 1—2 hours. Like in some days you will reach your destination in afternoon hours and then you can have lunch and then relax, or take shower, read a novel or wander around the area and even you can play cards with the group, guide and all.

Our Greetings at Airport:

We suggest you that when you are confirmed for this trip we advise you to give us your international flight schedule so, we the team can easily get to you and pick you up from the airport on time. As soon as you finish processing the customs formalities and come out from there and there you can find our representative carrying a signboard of Ganesh Himal Hiking Team and the team will greet you and take you to the hotel in private vehicle. Like if you have already booked the hotel by your own then we advise informing the hotel that you are staying so it will be easy for our representative to drop you at the hotel.

Itinerary and Possible Changes on it:

Our usual itinerary of the trek is 13 days which is main customary and pragmatic. In this 13 days itinerary it has also included your arrival day, departure day or Kathmandu sightseeing day tour are all included in this package itinerary. If you like to adjust the itinerary we can set it for you as per your desire so, before that let us know before booking the trip and then we will arrange the itinerary and the cost. Like if you like to extend more days then we will even manage it for you as in our package we have kept extra day because we don’t know the situation of Himalaya weather it suddenly changes and faces problems like delayed flights or cancellation of flight.

Insurance/Rescue/Evacuation:

Client’s safety is our main priority and makes sure that each and every client is well taken care of.  If by chance anyone got sick during trek we will take you to the hospital and if one is seriously ill then we will rescue a helicopter and then they will take you to the hospital and all the expenses are carried out by the travel insurance company so, make sure to cover the insurance policy. Booking and Payment:

For booking any trip, trek, expedition first you have to deposit 20% in advance if you are confirmed for the trek you have to send even your flight detail schedule, a passport photocopy and if you cancel the booking then this 20% is not -refundable.  The remaining 80% can be paid when you reach Kathmandu and if you want to pay in advance you can deposit it by transferring through a bank, credit card so, lets us know then we will be sending you the detail for payment. 

Flight Delay in Kathmandu and Lukla:

Only domestic mountain flight is only available to Lukla and sometimes the flight might be delayed or canceled due to unforeseen adverse Himalaya weather condition so, that why we have kept the extra day in the itinerary to cover up such situation like delay or cancel the flight. In case if the flight is canceled for 2 or more than that, then we will have to charter a helicopter and make sure that you reach on scheduled flight and reach safely in your own home. This extra service cost can be deposited directly to the Ganesh Himal Hiking Team office and the expense is carried out by the Insurance Company as the helicopter charter cost will be maximum US$ 500 or the US $ 3500 which depends on a number of people in flight.

We received outstanding personal service from Binod and his team at Ganesh Himal Hiking Team. It was an exceptional experience in every way. We were met at the airport, he gave us personal transportation along with many great tours to cultural sites in Kathmandu, he took us to some wonderful restaurants and he set us up in a very nice hotel in Thammel. Binod really knows how to take great care of his clients with a personal touch. We also loved meeting his mother, father and his family which added greatly to our cultural experience in Nepal.

Additionally, Binod's brother Bishnu, was our guide on our trek to Mt. Everest Base Camp. Bishnu took excellent care of my trekking partner and me throughout the trek to Everest Base Camp and back. Our trek was also an amazing cultural experience as well as a remarkable trekking experience! We loved the Nepalese people and, of course, we loved seeing the incredible scenery. Also, Binod personally guided us on a trip to Pokhara, Nepal where he arranged for us a guided rafting trip, a paragliding trip and a trip to Chitwan National Park where we did a tour on the back of an elephant spotting wildlife and we were able to attend a nice cultural program.
