Upper Mustang Tiji festival

TRIP OVERVIEW

Trip Information

The district of Mustang lies north of the chief Himalayan range in the region known as the trans-Himalaya. Mustang was only unlocked to explorers in March 1992. Upper Mustang recognized as Lo is a remote Himalayan area located north of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges which is bounded by the Tibetan plateau on all sides expect the south which links with Nepal. The Upper Mustang journey brings you into the concealed world of the old Buddhist kingdom of Mustang also named Lo. Lo used to be part of the Tibetan empire and is consequently closely tied to Tibet in culture, language and geography. It is too recognized as Royal Mustang trek. It is a flawless destination where plentiful scope is offered for visiting Buddhists Monasteries. The Upper Mustang and Tiji Festival trek is mostly aimed on observing the unique, age old traditions of the mystical upper Mustang region of Nepal. Upper Mustang has lately been opened for outsiders and it requires special permit to trek across. Upper Mustang was earlier the Kingdom of Lo and the Tiji festival has been carried out form former times to pursuit away the demons.  This festival was first perceived by first foreigner Michele Peissel Tiji festival in 1964.

Tenji festival typically pronounced” Teeji” is the abridged from of Tempa chhirim which translates to” prayer for world peace “The word Tiji derivative from the word “Ten Che”  which means the hope of Buddha religion dominant in all words. The festival which is celebrated for three day Tiji festival is formally known as “The Chasing of the Demons” which is based on mythical myths. The legend says that the deity named Dorje Jono who fought against his demon father to protect the Kingdom of Mustang from destruction. The demon father wreaked disaster on Mustang by bringing a scarcity of water (an extremely valuable resource in this very arid land) and this destruction lead to starvation and many deaths of animals. This why still today the lands of Mustang region are barren and tree less so; the Dorjee Jono ultimately beats the demon and eradicate him from the land. This festival is a festivity and reaffirmation of this legend and during the festival the numerous acts of the myth will be enacted. The festival usually held at the end of dry winter/spring season.

The festival functions with religious ceremony which reflects empowerment of strength and harmony between all devotees. The king of Lo Manthang keeps main role and the festival celebrates with performance of music and dance by monks. This festival is done these three days so the commencement of the first day is done by the blows of drums, cymbals and horns by the lamas, followed by spreading out of a Thanka down the south wall of the square then the festival is enacted through dances and also performed the dance wearing the masks etc. At day two the people around the communities enjoy their feast. On the third day the festival ends with the burning of the leftover of the replicated demon.

This Trek starts after a short and picturesque flight from Pokhara to Jomsom.  Upper Mustang is extensively popular for their enigmatic attractions where varied range of monasteries, caves, archeological legends, and prehistoric gompas with beautiful astonishing landscape can be seen and discover. On the way to your trail you will be following the world’s deepest valley – Kali Gandaki, many numbers of communities, forests with vistas of complete Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massif. After that you will be reaching to former capital of Upper Mustang Lo Manthang. At there you can observe the biggest tiji festival performed by the monks. After exploring the 3 days Tiji festival our return voyage goes to Dhakmar, Syangboche, Chhusang, Muktinath than lastly to Jomsom and take a flight to Pokhara.

An amazing trip with Ganesh Himal Hiking to Kathmandu, Mt. Everest BC, Pokhara and Chitwas

Rating: 5 - Excellent

We received outstanding personal service from Binod and his team at Ganesh Himal Hiking Team. It was an exceptional experience in every way. We were met at the airport, he gave us personal transportation along with many great tours to cultural sites in Kathmandu, he took us to some wonderful restaurants and he set us up in a very nice hotel in Thammel. Binod really knows how to take great care of his clients with a personal touch. We also loved meeting his mother, father and his family which added greatly to our cultural experience in Nepal.

Additionally, Binod's brother Bishnu, was our guide on our trek to Mt. Everest Base Camp. Bishnu took excellent care of my trekking partner and me throughout the trek to Everest Base Camp and back. Our trek was also an amazing cultural experience as well as a remarkable trekking experience! We loved the Nepalese people and, of course, we loved seeing the incredible scenery. Also, Binod personally guided us on a trip to Pokhara, Nepal where he arranged for us a guided rafting trip, a paragliding trip and a trip to Chitwan National Park where we did a tour on the back of an elephant spotting wildlife and we were able to attend a nice cultural program. The accommodations in Pokhara and the food were fantastic. I highly recommend Binod and his Ganesh Himal Hiking Team to anyone who is interested in receiving the best service and the best trekking and cultural experience in Nepal.
